Assembly Reliability

Assembly Reliability Pin-Through-Hole

PTH Issues

While reworking a PCB, the technician must take adequate care to repair or modify the board. To insert a new component, the technician must clear the solder from inside the plated-through holes. This requires careful heating as excess heat has the potential to damage the annular rings connected to the hole-plating.

If the operator is soldering the component in a wave soldering machine using lead-free solder, the temperature settings need careful consideration. This is because the lead-free solder has a substantially higher melting point compared to leaded solder.

If the operator has set the process temperature incorrectly, the solder may not melt properly and will not form a good bond, or the board and components on it may get damaged.

Mixed Component Soldering Assembly

With both SMT and PTH devices present on the PCB assembly, the operator must take several steps for soldering them.
